Research on Korean Hemorrhagic Fever

FelixJC
Abstract
Following conclusions present the result of study and survey on the Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF) from January to December in 1972.
1. The Number of wild rodents collected from epidemic foci of KHF was 291, among which the majority was Apodemus agrarius coreae and then Microtus fortis pelliceus in order. It was March, April and May for the most rondents to be collected. This suggest that the monthly incidence of collected rodents is in parallel with that of KHF patients.
2. From the spleen. and cervical lymphnodes of rodent collected in 1972 ten strains of unknown microorganisms could be isolated by means of tissue culture technic. Eight strains from Microtus fortis pelliceus was resistant to antibiotics and did not pass the seitz filter. On the other hand, two strains from ¢¥Apodems agrarius coreae was filterable ones that did pass the seitz filter and was also resistant to antibiotics. The relationships between these microorganisms and KHF, and their biological characteristics are under investigation.
3. The hospitalized patients to KHF unit of ROKA in 1972 mount up¢¥ to 203 among whom 14 was dead.
The monthly incidence shows that it is May, June, October and November for the most patients.
4. The total number of case were 186 in civilian population in 1972 whereas 348 in 1971. This decrease in case. frequency would be in conformity with a ten year cycle of disease observed since 1957.
The geographical distribution of case, confirms the apparent ,spread of the disease from the ,original endenic area near the DMZ towards the South(see Map)and seasonal distribution of case followed the usual pattern.
The case fatality was 8.6%. Seventy percent of the cases belonged to the age groups 2P50 yews.
